On December 6, 2022, Independence Square and renovated Memorial of Heroes who died for the independence of Georgia were opened in the city of Rustavi.
The opening ceremony was attended by Major General Koba Kobaladze, Director of the State Service of Veteran Affairs, Juansher Burchuladze, Minister of Defense of Georgia, Nino Latsabidze, Mayor of Rustavi, Levan Amiridze, head of the Department for Regional Management of the State Service of Veteran Affairs, representatives of the Defense Forces and local authorities.
The area which is known as the Alley of Fame by the residents of Rustavi has been completely rehabilitated. The memorials of the heroes who died for the independence of Georgia during different periods situated in the square have been restored. The Alley of the Memorials of Heros was opened with the honor guard of the National Guard and the military orchestra. Independence Square begins with a new monument of May 26. On the area of 9,000 square meters, there are the memorials of the heroes who died for the territorial integrity of Georgia, soldiers who died in the Second World War, as well as soldiers who died in peacekeeping missions and during the clashes in April 9.
The monument consisting of 13 pillars of the heroes who died for the territorial integrity of Georgia, which creates 13 pillars of light at night, is the work of an architect Koba Samabashvili who is from from Rustavi while the author of the memorials of the heroes who died during peacekeeping missions and within the course of April 9 tragedy, is a sculptor Valery Jikia who is also from the city of Rustavi.
In addition to the Memorials of Heroes, the renovated square has a pedestrian and bicycle path, green spaces, outdoor lighting network, irrigation system and recreation areas. The recreational space is adapted to people with disabilities. The project was implemented with the co-financing of the City Hall of Rustavi and the Municipal Development Fund.
