From Georgia to the U.S. Banking Sector – An Interview with Tatia

In today’s world, international education and career opportunities are becoming increasingly accessible to young people. However, this path often comes with challenges, hard work, and determination. Tatia is one of those young people who turned her educational journey from Georgia into a successful career in the United States. Today, she works in the banking sector as a Senior Personal Banker, continues her studies at the master’s level, and actively participates in the professional network for financial risk management.

We spoke with her about her experiences, challenges, and future plans.

- Your path from Georgia to the U.S. is very interesting. Can you tell us how your educational journey began?

-My educational journey began in Georgia at Tbilisi Public School #195. During my school years, I was

actively involved in various educational programs and activities. One of the most significant experiences was in 2017, when I participated in the “Future Generation” project funded by USAID and implemented by PH International. The program involved planning and carrying out activities that promoted teamwork and the development of leadership skills.

— You also participated in a business-related project. What experience did you gain from that program?

— During the same period, I participated in the “Basics of Business” project held at IBSU. This program provided very valuable experience, as it introduced me to the fundamentals of business and helped me understand how diverse and interesting the field of finance and business management is. This experience sparked my growing interest in business and finance.

—  Later, your life changed unexpectedly when you moved to the United States. How do you remember that period?

— After finishing the school year, I unexpectedly moved to the United States. This was a very significant change in my life. The biggest challenges at the time were the language barrier and adapting to a completely new

environment. Despite these difficulties, the experience motivated me and helped me become more determined and goal-oriented.

—  How did your studies continue in the U.S.?

— I continued my studies at Rachel Carson High School, which I successfully graduated from in June 2020. During this period, I was awarded a National Honor Society Certificate of Membership, which was a great honor and important achievement for me, as the organization recognizes students who are academically and socially active.

— Then you went on to university and chose a professional direction. Why did you choose finance and business?

Tatia: In August of the same year, I started my studies at Brooklyn College, where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Finance and Business Management in June 2023. This choice came naturally because I had already been involved in various business-related programs and activities in Georgia. That experience helped me realize that finance and business are highly interesting and promising fields for me.

— Today you work in the banking sector. What does your work involve?

— I currently work as a Senior Personal Banker. My daily activities include interacting with clients, providing financial advice, offering banking products, and helping clients find the best financial solutions.

From your experience, what is most important for success in the banking sector?

Tatia: I think the most important factors for success in banking are responsibility, professionalism, and strong communication skills. In finance, trust is crucial — clients need to feel that their financial decisions are safe and in the right hands. It’s also essential to continue learning and developing, as the financial field is constantly evolving and demands up-to-date knowledge.

— You are also continuing your education. What are you studying now?

— I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in general business. In addition, I am a member of GARP (Global Association of Risk Professionals), which supports professional development in financial risk management.

What are your professional goals for the next few years?

— Being part of GARP has been a very valuable experience for me. I look forward to further developing my career in the finance sector. One of my goals is also to start my own business in the financial field.

—  Finally, what advice would you give to young people in Georgia who are considering an international career?

— The most important things are hard work and determination. An international career is not an easy path

— it requires effort, patience, and continuous growth. However, if a person is truly determined and does not give up on their goals, opportunities will definitely appear.

Tatia’s story reminds us that education, hard work, and determination open doors to international opportunities. What began as a journey in Georgia has today become a successful professional career with even greater possibilities and achievements ahead.
