As it was released recently, on September 3, the UN General Assembly once again reaffirmed fundamental support for ensuring the trampled rights of Georgian citizens expelled from the country’s occupied regions of Abkhazia and Samachablo. Its resolution on “Status of Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia and the Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia, Georgia” this year had unprecedented support – it has been backed by 84 member states with 13 votes against. As official Tbilisi noted with satisfaction, the number of supporters has increased and the number of opponents of the document has diminished compared to previous years, thus it became an example of a truly global position of the international community.
In this regard, the question of the stance of Georgia's immediate neighbors taken during the voting seems to be interesting. Thus, Azerbaijan and Turkey were among those who voted "in favour". Russia is predictably “against”. And Armenia decided not to take part in the voting at all.
Well, each country has made its own choice. And this point we should know about in order to take it into account in the future.
