This year marks the 28th anniversary of the Battle of Tamishi. On this date, on July 2, at 10:00, the Director of the State Service for Veterans Affairs, Major General KobaKobaladze, together with representatives of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, members of parliament and veterans will lay a wreath at the memorial to the heroes who died for the territorial integrity of Georgia.
On July 2, 1993, at 05:00, near the town of Tamish, the Abkhaz side landed a Russian warship. The landing consisted of 600 men. In the morning, the first blow was received by Georgian units stationed in Tamish, Labra and ZemoKindghi. Along with the landing, the Abkhazian formation intensified. The enemy attacked part of the Georgian units from the north. The attack was so sudden that almost every Georgian soldier on the ground was killed. All Georgian combat units participated in the battle; The Georgian side lost about 300 fighters as a result of several days of fighting. Despite the great loss, the Georgian fighters were able to repel the landing, maintained their positions and completely destroyed the naval landing. Despite the serious losses, the Georgians did not cede the strategic zone in terms of combat. On July 10-11, the Ochamchire-Sukhumi highway was fully opened. The Russian landing in the Thames was aimed at capturing Sokhumi, but the repulse of the landing delayed this plan for several months. The battles of one of the episodes of the Abkhaz war - July 1993 - went down in Georgian history as the greatest example of self-sacrifice and heroism of Georgian soldiers.
